The award has been running for over nine years and was named after the late Dave Dandy who was a dedicated and highly respected Paramedic and mentor. He also served as a Paramedic lecturer at ACU and Monash University. Dave was diagnosed with a terminal illness, however continued to lecture in paramedicine at both universities up until he passed away.
Held on 4 May 2017, the award recognises outstanding fourth year graduates who symbolise mateship and a willingness to help out their fellow students to achieve positive results in their degree studies.
This year, Dylan Williams was awarded the top honour and was presented with the $500 cash prize, donated by Next Step Financial Strategies.
Dylan’s passion for paramedicine began during his service as a Combat Engineer within the Australian Army. After being involved in a training accident, where he sustained serious injuries, he was impressed at the professionalism of the paramedics who responded to the scene. While undergoing rehabilitation, Dylan decided to study paramedicine at the ACU. Since then, he’s held an impressive list of leadership roles including President of the Paraquinas – a local paramedics society, and in 2017 was appointed co-chair of Student Paramedics Australia.
It’s stories like Dylan’s that make us so proud to support the amazing and many times thankless work of Australian paramedics and emergency services, in their local communities.
